Whats that funny noise?
Trophies in hand and leg muscles aching, we loaded up our stalwart BMW and once again headed out onto the autobahns. Unlike the trip down, the 4 hour drive home took nearly 7 hours, courtesy of a 20 mile Stau around Munich. Mary’s expert navigation got us around much of the jam via back roads and some lovely pastoral scenery, which is also where we first noticed the funny “squeak, squeak, squeak” coming from the rear of our car. By the time we got back onto the Autobahn, the noise had been promoted to an ominous “squeak/thump” combination and we were both wondering if we had been doomed to an eternity of expensive car repairs. An emergency stop at a service station showed that the noise was caused by about a foot of discarded tire chain that had wound itself around our back axle at some point. It was easily removed, and other than the horrendous noise, there was no apparent damage. With considerably lighter hearts-and a much quieter car-we made it the rest of the way home without incid
