What’s the best way to achieve smooth ceiling finish- I have artex now!?

Couple of ways to do this really. If you want the best finish, rip the ceiling down, stick up some fresh plasterboard, stick some coving around the edges, tape up the joints and paint….but that’s quite a big messy job (not that expensive material wise though). Another way for a smooth finish is to get a plasterer in and set him to work at it. I don’t suggest tackling either of these options yourself though. You could, buy some artex yourself, scrape back whats on there as much as possible (If there isn’t a risk of asbestos) and attempt to add a layer of thickly mixed artex using a finishing trowel. This will dry white, but I’d still recommend painting. There are a whole bunch of problems that can occur though, if you have a plasterboard ceiling, the joints have been taped up, if this was done incorrectly you could find that as soon as you apply something to the ceiling, the joint could become ‘alive’ and will need to be re-worked and allowed to set before work can continue.
