Whats the best way to clean rims?

In most cases, soap, water, and elbow grease provide an adequate way to clean rims.  If you wash your vehicle fairly frequently, and wash your rims each time with a brush or cloth, you shouldn’t have a problem keeping your chrome or aluminum wheels looking sharp.

An occasional deeper cleaning may be in order.  A wheel cleaning brush is a handy detailing tool.   This is typically a long, narrow brush on a handle that allows you to get into the holes and crevices of your wheels.  If you find that there is oil or road grime that is difficult to remove, use an inexpensive chrome polish such as Turtle Wax Chrome Polish.  Expensive chemicals are no more effective than the cheaper ones.

Do not ever use an acidic aluminum cleaner on alloy wheels – this will strip the top finish off your rims and make them dull.  Do not be tempted to use any harsh chemicals on rims – sometimes the only way to get stubborn deposits off is to just work harder with a brush and soap or mild chrome cleaner.

When you wax your car you should also put a light coat of wax on your rims.  This will make your rims easier to keep clean.

Mild dish soap and vinegar in warm water tends to work the best but it will take a little bit of elbow grease if brake dust and road salt are on them. They have several specific wheel cleaners in auto parts stores.. some that require you only spraying them on and rinsing them off with a hose but they dont really work as well as getting down there and actually scrubbing them with soft washrag or sponge and really washing them.
