I have a standard poodle. In the summer I shear her short with a rounded topnotch on her head, full ears & tail sometimes puffs on her ankles but that is a lot of scissoring & time consuming if you don't have the experience. DO NOT buy a 50.00 clipper at wal-mart if you plan to groom yourself. Spend the 150 on a good ANDIS or OSTER clippers you will be able to buy different length interchangeable blades to suit the length you desire. I will say this however, Poodles hair grows fast so I wouldn' t be concerned with cutting his hair too short unless its 20below & he has to spend considerable amount of time outdoors!
