What’s the difference between a personal flotation device (PFD) and a life jacket?
Life jackets are those orange, red or yellow flotation devices with the keyhole opening for your head. They are designed to turn an unconscious person face-up in the water, which makes them your first choice for protection. The less cumbersome PFD fits like a sports jacket, is more comfortable and, depending on the design, may provide better hypothermia protection and insulation. The life jacket vs. PFD debate is really one of safety vs. comfort. If your child finds a life jacket too uncomfortable, he may not wear it, in which case there is no protection at all. And remember, pool noodles, water wings and other swim toys aren’t a safe substitute for a government-approved PFD or life jacket.
