Acrylic paint is plastic based and water soluble. Acrylics dry quickly and tend to be very opaque. Oil paints are a pigment mixed with linseed oil and have to be mixed with a medium like stand oil, damar varnish, and thinner. They take a very long time to dry, which opens up more possibilities for blending, but can be difficult to control. Oil paints are also more versatile in their opacity. Applied straight from the tube, they are very opaque, but they can also be thinned down into transparent glazes and applied in layers.  more
