In the North American market, “Cellular” phones have existed since the mid 1980’s. In the mid to late 1990’s, newer digital technologies where introduced to replace the older analog technology. As a marketing ploy for newer technology, many service providers and phone companies promoted these newer phones as “Digital Personal Communication Service” or “PCS”. Now that most of the market is using digital phones, the idea behind Digital PCS has faded and people once again default to “Cellular Phone”. The word “Mobile” is common in Europe, Northern Africa, the Middle East, Australia and most of Asia.
