If you are a US citizen, I’ll give you the short answer. We can pretty much control NATO. We cannot control the UN. The longer version: NATO is a treaty alliance among the US and its European allies which was conceived to counter the spread of communism from the USSR. NATO is, at it’s heart, a defensive organization. Nine times out of eleven, the US will get it’s way within NATO. The UN was designed as a mechanism for peaceful interchange among the countries of the world. The rulers of the UN are five countries, one of which is the US. But we cannot control the UN as we can control NATO. In the UN, every nation that is a member has a voice. Even though perhaps we give the most in financial support, that does not make the US all-important. NATO is a war organization.
