These are all anti-anxiety meds that are chemically similar. They all belong to a class of meds known as benzodiazepines. The primary difference between them is how long they stay active in your body after taking them. At one extreme is diazepam (Valium). This has a half life of 20-80 hours, depending on the individual. In the case of Valium, let’s take 50 as the average between 20 and 80. This means that 50 hours after taking Valium, half of it is still in your system. After another 25 hours, 1/4 is still in your body. The med continues to slowly taper out of your body. Valium is used mostly for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), muscle relaxation, and several other uses. Ativan is called a short acting benzo since its half life is only 10 to 20 hours.
