Yes, Both of them do amplify sound but in different ways. Without going into much technical detail, lets understand that Tubes/Valves amplify sound especially instrument (guitar) sounds in a way which is tonally pleasing to the human ear due to certain factors like note decay characeristics giving longer sustain, natural compression, midrange emphasis, compressed soft clipping when overdriven, preservation of harmonic content, etc.
