Whats the downside of a CMS?
All CMS applications have a different way of doing things and are designed primarily to cut out the need for a web designer for most tasks, so you can manage your website cheaply and easily. Updating content is usually very simple in a CMS, but learning to use all features of your CMS is important if you plan on customising your site more heavily. To do any of this, some CMS websites require a high level of design skills and webmaster knowledge, which kind of defeats the point of cutting out the designer. Also, each CMS will have certain characteristics, settings and features that cannot be easily changed. This may include signup pages, layouts, URL settings, backup methods etc.
