Flash floods pounded south central North Dakota with up to 6.25 inches of rain and golf ball-sized hail in just a few short hours Monday evening into early this morning. There was also an unconfirmed sighting of a funnel cloud in northeast Bismarck, according to the National Weather Service. Bismarck and Burleigh County both issued “no travel” warnings throughout the evening as manhole covers popped out from the streets. Burleigh County Emergency Manager Mary Senger and Bismarck Emergency Manager Gary Stockert said “no travel” warnings were issued throughout the city and county as water inundated streets and homes. “We’re getting a lot of reports of manholes popping out,” Stockert said. He said lightning would be factored before sending crews out to replace the manhole covers. Drivers were asked to use caution, as there was not enough time or manpower to mark dangerous locations.
