While 5.1 is the overwhelming standard for both consumer and cinema surround, the number of channels for a live performance is usually based upon the requirements of the program. Many acts tour with a 4.0 quad sytem, a 6.0 system with speakers directly on the sides at 90 degrees from the center, or any other combination that best represents the program material.  more
