The chances of producing pups is approximately 99.9% when housing two opposite sex guinea pigs in the same cage. The sows go into estrus cycle approximately every 16 days. The problem is that there are no obvious outward signs (like having a period–they don’t have periods), so we have no way of knowing exactly when they are fertile. The other issue of which you should be aware is that sows over the age of seven months should NOT be bred. The pelvic area closes so that it is impossible for the pups to descend through the birth canal. This condition is known as dystocia. Thus, both the mum pig and the pups die during childbirth. If you don’t accurately know the age of the sow you plan to take, I would not even chance it. As for your friend’s pigs that didn’t breed—I’ve never heard of such. That is a rarity among rarities.
