NEW ORLEANS — The mighty Mississippi has been the lifeblood of the Crescent City for hundreds of years, but some watchdog groups say the river is now badly contaminated, endangering the livelihood and health of the communities it supports. WDSU took a look at what is polluting the river and where it’s coming from. The information comes from a report from the Environment America Research and Policy Center. It was released in Fall 2009 and analyzes information reported directly to the Environmental Protection Agency. That data allowed the EPA to evaluate 1,900 U.S. rivers, lakes and streams.
