Whats wrong with allowing citizens to vote every time there is an annexation?
It adds unnecessary costs for special elections and significantly slows down the annexation process. Our City Council members are elected by Union citizens to represent their interests and make sure the day-to-day operations of running a city occur smoothly and efficiently. The charter amendment, which has been negated by the courts, circumvents City Council’s role and places additional burdens on citizens’ time and tax dollars. Additionally, requiring a vote every time would hurt the City’s ability to attract new businesses to the area. For example, if a large business wanted to move to Union near Dayton International Airport, to remain competitive with other cities, we would likely need to expedite the already lengthy annexation process in order to gain that company.
