He called up Speakeasy a few minutes ago to let us in on what it’s like to get ready to sing the anthem in front of millions of people — and the grief the University of Pennsylvania alum is facing for rooting for the Yankees when many of his pals are pulling for the Phillies. The Wall Street Journal: So how were you picked to sing the national anthem at the World Series? John Legend: You’d have to ask them, I don’t know their selection process but they asked me to perform and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. Who are you rooting for tonight? I assume the Phillies because of your connection to Philadelphia. John Legend is going to the World Series. Major League Baseball says the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter will perform the national anthem before Game Two at Yankee Stadium Thursday (Oct. 29). New York natives Jay-Z and Alicia Keys will warm up the audience with their single “Empire State of Mind” before Legend sings.
