When can I harvest english walnuts?

Fall is a good time to harvest English walnuts. Late August through September, gather fallen nuts. You can spread out an old tarp under the trees and shake the tree so nuts fall onto the tarp. Dry your nuts outside if possible, in a sunny, but well-ventilated area then hull them. When drying, make sure you turn them every day. This process takes 2-3 weeks. You can hull the nuts and store them in a dry, cool place. We shell many to freeze in plastic bags. This keeps bugs and squirrells out and makes the nuts last up to a year. To store whole nuts, it is a good idea to put them into plastic bins to keep rats & squirrells out. Here is a recipe for candied walnuts: http://www.elise.com/recipes/archives/00… Good luck!
