When describing an oriental person (Chinese, Japanese, etc.) is it improper to refer to them as Asian?

no not really i am japanese and i dont find it offended by when someone calls me asian i find it a little more convient because they try to guess what kind of asian i am but it would be better if you know where they are from then you should use their umm type of asian instead but if you know they are asian but do not know what kind then i would think it is ok

No it’s not improper to refer to them as Asian at all. But it is improper to say “Oriental”. Only things can be correctly described as Oriental, not people. Just describe them as a person.
