When did Australia ban the feeding of ruminant feed to cattle?
Top In 1996 Australian livestock industries adopted a voluntary ban on the feeding of ruminant derived MBM to ruminants, in accordance with World Health Organization recommendations. In October 1997, legislation was introduced in all Australian States and Territories to make the ban compulsory. The ruminant feed ban was later extended to MBM from all mammals except horses, pigs and kangaroos which are not susceptible to TSEs. The Agriculture and Resource Management Council of Australia and New Zealand (ARMCANZ) agreed in March 2001 to introduce legislation in States and Territories to strengthen and extend the existing ban on certain classes of feedstuff to ruminants and to audit compliance with those feed bans.
