Elimina’s has managed to answer most of you question but I’d like to point out a couple of errors. Firstly the famous bearded portrait often thought to be a self portrait of Leonardo was made using red chalk. Secondly and most importantly, being an art historian and having studied Leonardo’s work for many years, | would argue that there is are surviving self portraits of the artist. Leonardo appears to have depicted himself in his unfinished Adoration of the Magi. Also if you compare this painted young man to Verrocchio’s David which Leonardo could have modeled for, being Verrocchio’s pupil, you will see an astonishing similarity.
