When did they start speaking English in Scotland?

There is no such language as Scottish. Gaelic was the native language of most of North and West Scotland but is now only spoken by about 30-40,000 people. English-albeit a dialect of English has been spoken in most of Scotland as long as it has been in England. If you go back 1,200 years then the native Picts had a language of their own which is now lost. In the South and West of Scotland the people were said to speak a language more akin to Welsh. To the South and East the language was the same as spoken by those in the North and East of England. In the middle ages the language of the royal court tended to be French with the written documents in Latin. The name Britain came to be used with the Union of Crowns in 1603. Then King James V1 of Scotland became the first monarch of Britain. 1707 was the Union of Parliaments. Hope this has been of some help Stephen.
