when does it become Dance Sport i.e. official Competitions?
RH/WJB: Basically it must be said, that the terminology Ballroom Dancing” is antiquated. It is of British origin and was created at times where tournament dancing was exceptionally carried out in ballrooms”. The known British care for traditions is the reason that this term is still used nowadays but only for the discipline of the standard dances besides that of the Latin-American dances. Since the foundation of the International Council of Amateur Dancers ICAD in the year 1957, there is only referred to Dance Sport with the disciplines Standard- and Latin-American. In 1957 in the Deutschlandhall of Berlin it was for the first time ever that an international Championship was organised in a real sportshall, 10 000 visitors and spectators made this event a very big success. Since that time and in increasing numbers International Championships and as well important and big International Competitions are only organised in huge sporthalls.
