When does the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, open its doors for business?”
Amid clouds of confetti and the blasts of fireworks, hundreds of people swarmed into the Rivers Casino at high noon today to open the slots-gambling era in Pittsburgh. Many of the patrons had stood outside in sweltering heat and also packed a bus depot waiting area this morning waiting to try out their luck. First in line outside the casino’s main entrance this morning was Jim Viscusi, 63, of Bellevue. He arrived at 5:30 a.m. “I just wanted to have the honor of saying I was the first official one after they cut the ribbon,” he said. Janet Layton, 64, of Clarion, got up at 4 a.m. and drove two hours to stand in line. Ms. Layton describes herself as an “avid gambler” and said she saw the casino on TV and wanted to be there for the opening. “We were coming early to beat the traffic and not get pushed in the door,” she said.
