When I look at my process list, I see “Yojimbo Helper” and “Yojimbo”. What are these, and what code does Yojimbo install in my system?
Yojimbo is entirely self contained; everything it needs resides within the Yojimbo application package, and nothing (other than the Yojimbo application itself, when you drag it to the Applications folder) is installed in your system. The “Yojimbo Helper” process is responsible for presenting the Quick Input Panel (which comes up when you press F8 or whatever key it is you’ve configured in the Hot Key preferences). The “Yojimbo” process (named “Yojimbo.real” if you’re still running Yojimbo 1.0 — in which case you should update) is the application itself – it’s actually started by a little “trampoline” which first checks to make sure you’re running on a compatible version of Mac OS X before launching Yojimbo itself. This gives us the ability to present a more helpful error message than older versions of Mac OS X are capable of doing on their own. This trampoline is called SystemVersionCheck and was written by Chris Campbell. More information is available here.
