When I open the embroidery file, why do the thread shades shown not match the Madeira shades listed on the printout?

DST and EXP files do not contain any color information – they just display in your programs default colors. Other formats such as ART, HUS, JEF and PES have a limited palette of colors that we can choose from for the display colors. Shades that exactly match the Madeira shades simply aren’t available to choose from. Some embroidery programs such as Embird will create a second “palette” file to accompany each design that will hold the additional display information with exact thread shades, but they are specific to each program rather than being a universal file that all the programs will read.
