When is it safe to try to navigate my car or sport-utility vehicle through a flooded street?
What looks like a shallow puddle could actually be a fast-rising tide of two feet or more that could stall, seriously damage your engine, and leave you trapped. Take a detour if you come upon a flooded street, or pull over and walk. If you get stranded, turn off the engine and dial 911, if you have a cell phone. If not, roll down your window and yell for assistance. If water is deep enough to flood your engine, and especially if is moving fast, it might not be safe to get out and walk. Q. If water covers the hood, it might damage the engine, electrical system, and upholstery so badly that the insurance company will declare the car totaled.
