When is the best time to visit the former Dachau camp?
The weather is best in the Spring and the Fall, but when school is in session, there are many groups of high school students touring the camp, particularly on Wednesdays. Weekends are also crowded with tourists. Tuesdays and Thursdays are the days when the Memorial Site is the least crowded. The gate is open as early as 8:30 in the morning, and you can walk around the grounds before the Museum opens at 9 a.m. The first school groups arrive at 9 a.m. If you want to see all the exhibits, the movie, the religious memorials, the graves and the gas chambers, it will take all day with a break for lunch in the cafeteria at the camp. To get good photographs, you will need to take both early morning and late afternoon shots to avoid unwanted shadows.
