Much of the water in rivers is from groundwater, more specifically, where groundwater reaches the surface, the same applies to lakes, swamps and ponds as well Precipitation adds to the groundwater, but if there is not enough precipitation to replenish the rivers (all groundwater comes from precipitation) then the river will dry up
