You will need to hire an interior designer if your project involves construction work. The type of interior designer you will hire is called an Architectural Designer.

What do architect designers do?

Architect designers design the exterior and interior of a building with the overall design in mind. They are concerned with the basics of building structure and the appearance on how to blend the two together.

Architectural designers are trained not only in the esthetics of the project, such as what colors, styles and materials will be used but also the actual construction. The construction will include working with building plans and making sure your interior design project is in compliance with the building codes in the city or town where the construction will take place.

Architectural designers can also help you save time and money as they have contacts in the field of interior design. They can offer invaluable suggestions as to the best materials for your project as it relates to:

  • Appearance
  • Durability
  • Cost effectiveness
  • Safety

A great example of an architect designer is Michael Graves. His buildings often combine whimsy and sophistication. Graves founded his practice in Princeton, New Jersey in 1964. His works include playful designs for furniture and other household items to grand projects such as the Dolphin and Swan Hotels for the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. Graves uses columns, pediments, arches and other historic architectural details.

Training of the architect designer

As you can imagine, individuals who design buildings, houses and other structures using blueprints, three-dimensional models and computer-based drafting programs require extensive training. Those interested in careers in architecture will usually obtain at least a bachelor’s degree from a school with an architecture program that is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. After graduation, students must pass the Architect Registration Examination in order to become licensed. Most states however prohibit the use of the term "architectural" as well except by licensed individuals.
