When to start baby food?
You should start baby food, when your baby is showing signs of being ready and atleast between 4-6 months of age. You should start out with rice cereal first to get your baby used to eating from a spoon, and then move on to baby food, after about a couple weeks to a month. Age: 4 to 6 months Signs of readiness for solid food Your baby probably won’t do all these things — they’re just clues to watch for. • Can hold head up • Sits well in highchair • Makes chewing motions • Shows significant weight gain (birth weight has doubled) • Shows interest in food • Can close mouth around a spoon • Can move food from front to back of mouth • Can move tongue back and forth, but is losing tendency to push food out with tongue • Seems hungry after 8 to 10 feedings of breast milk or 40 oz. of formula in a day • Is teething What to feed • Breast milk or formula, PLUS • Semi-liquid iron-fortified rice cereal, THEN • Other grain cereals like oats or barley How much per day • Begin with about 1 teaspoon d
It’s different for every baby. My son started rice cereal just after 4 months b/c he was starving all the time. But he also had great head control and no longer had the tongue thrust reflex. My ped said all the signs pointed to the fact that he was ready. We did only cereal until he was 5 months then we introduced a little pureed fruit, then at 6 months we added pureed veggies. At 7 months he started some finger foods. Mainly just mushy bananas, ect. Your doctor can tell you if baby is ready. The general rule is 6 months but every baby has different needs. Just don’t put any cereal in the bottle. That is a bad idea for 2 reasons. One they really don’t get as much as they would if they ate it from a spoon anyways, and two, they need to learn how to eat from a spoon. All food doesn’t come directly from a bottle.
I know this may sound young to some (2 months) of you but I started mine on cereal but made it more into a thick shake form. But they all weighed close to 10lbs by then. Once I gave them cereal they started to sleep through the night or close to it. But giving them food in the jars, I started with fruit. Some times I mixed the fruit and cereal together and put it in the cereal feeder. Some babies can’t handle fruit early so if they get the runs resume from giving it to them until they are older. Other baby foods I just gradually introduced them too it when I thought it was time.
