When two people walk side by side, why do their steps become synchronised?
(submitted by Jimbob) Answer: So that they travel at the same speed presumably. There may be more to it subconsciously. For instance: the other person is providing a rhythm with which to synchronise your strides, thus allowing more braintime for other processes such as idle banter and watching fit birds. It probably has a psychological effect as well setting both walkers at ease or something because they are in synchrony instead of competing. They have to be walking together. Two people as one unit rather than just two people who don’t give a rat’s flaps where the other one’s going.
