When vacuuming pure cornstarch powder, I get static electricity shocks from the vacuum, why?

powder can build up tremendous surface charges because powder has such a large surface area compared to its volume, it can generate large surface charges by contact with each other or with other surfaces my guess is that some of this excess charge is being deposited onto the vacuum cleaner and causing your shocks this will be the case for any vacuum cleaner, so it is not a fault of the vacuum, just the nature of dealing with moving powder
