When was Theodore Roosevelt president?
Roosevelt was elected Vice-President on the ticket with William McKinley in 1900. When McKinley was assassinated, Roosevelt became President. Upon his re-election in 1904, Roosevelt publicly declared that he would not seek a second elected term in office. He later regretted this statement, to which he felt bound. After Roosevelt’s hand-picked successor William Howard Taft won the 1908 election, Roosevelt decided to split from the Republican party and ran (unsuccessfully) for president in his own independent Bull Moose Party in the 1912 election.
