People started copying movie stars almost as soon as movies became popular in the 20’s and 30’s. This trend became really big in the 40’s and 50’s, with people frequently wearing film stars’ hairdoes, calling their kids after them and so on. Politicians are rather less popular, except perhaps for the Kennedys in the US, who mingled with stars like Monroe and lived rather colourful lives. Examples in my lifetime–the Farrah Fawcett flick haircut, the 80’s big shoulder pads and big hair as seen on Dallas and Dynasty, the Princess Diana cut. At one time the name Sean was mainly used for Irish boys–it became big around the world after a certain Mr Connery played Bond some 50 years ago.
