When will the vertical shafts for the Savio railway tunnel be built and what is their purpose?

The shafts will be located at the contract borders and their excavation will take place in the final stage of tunnelling, for technical reasons. Before this preparatory work such as pre-grouting and reinforcement and the boring of holes for the shaft will have to be performed, however. These can be done in advance. The shafts will be built at different times according to each contractor’s timetable once the railway tunnel has been excavated. A small building will be constructed at the top of each shaft. The shafts will serve as emergency escape routes and smoke exhausts.
