After the G2 step of interphase. Additional: Interphase is the term for all the steps in between mitotic events. These steps are Growth 1 (G1), Stationary (S), Growth 2 (G2) and in some cells quiescence (G0). G1 is the first step of interphase when metabolic steps end. This is when the two small daughter cells increase their cellular components (remember everything gets divided in two when the cell divides). G1 ends when DNA synthesis begins. When DNA synthesis begins S phase has begun. S phase is when DNA is replicated into two matching pairs or chromatids. When the DNA is replicated the cell enters G2 phase. G2 is the last phase of interphase and occurs right before mitosis begins. In G2 the cell makes proteins and microtubules it will need in mitosis. Some cells enter G0 from G1. G0 cells are cells which do not need to divide (think neurons). These cells are simply alive and not dividing but merely maintaining themselves. Mitosis would be triggered during certain environmental conditions. These might include optimal temperature, chemical concentrations, and light. This assumes the amoeba has access to adequate energy, which supersedes any of the variables above. I don’t think an amoeba would reproduce every 20 min – that’s quick even for bacteria.
