Where are the most whales located in the Atlantic Ocean?
The majority of whales and dolphins (both are cetaceans) can be found along the coastlines of the major continents. Most are either migratory or wide ranging and if not separated by landforms frequent all oceans of the world. Migratory whales move north and south in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres but in general the northern populations do not meet their southern counterparts. The equator is a natural barrier to the larger whales as they carry far to much blubber for tropical waters. Therefore, the southern Atlantic migratory whales move from the Antarctic up the coasts of South America to the west, as far as Salvador, and Africa to the east, as far as Angola. The northern Atlantic migratory whales move from the Arctic down the coasts of North America to the west, as far as the Caribbean, and Europe to the east as far as Spain. Dolphins are free ranging and are usually found between the Continental shelf and the coastline. Some are found around islands and crossing the open
