Since you want to block out exterior noises, you can go with either so-called “sealed” headphones, or “in-ear monitors” or “canal headphones” or just “canalphones” that provide a good seal. Sealed phones are a type of “circumaural” or “around the ear” headphones. They cover your ear entirely with a rigid shell, and have cushions that only press lightly on your head. They may not even touch your ears. They are bigger, heavier and more expensive (typically) than the “on-ear” headphones you usually see, but they are usually more comfortable for long-term wear. In sealed headphones, the shell is closed, while in open or ported headphones, the shell is open, which lets outside sounds in (and inside sounds out.)
