There might be a terminology issue here. The “window” includes sashes and the frame. Sashes are the movable unit and sometimes have only one pane of glass or sometimes 6 panes in them. Sashes are made to take either single or double pane glass (aka glazing) not both. If your sash is made for single pane windows you have several options: 1. Replace the complete window with double glazed windows. In practice this usually means taking out the sashes and inserting a new window in the space complete with frame. You could remove the entire old frame and install a new window but this will require refinishing the inside and outside walls. 2. Replace the sashes with double glazed window sashes. As these will have to be custom made it may cost even more than the double paned replacement windows. 3 make your own. I had to do this where the basement windows of an old church were made with stained glass (but not leaded stained glass and the sashes were wooden.) On some of the windows I put a single
