Any vests containing the material Poly-p-phenylene benzobisoxasole (commonly known as PBO or Zylon®) fiber do not comply with the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) Interim Requirements for Bullet-Resistant Body Armor (Sept. 26, 2005), as amended and supplemented. In addition, the New Jersey Attorney General issued a March 7, 2006 Directive to all law enforcement agencies to replace all body armor containing Zylon® by December 31, 2006. The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) examined Zylon®-based bullet-resistant vests (both new and used) as a part of a Department of Justice (DOJ) initiative addressing body armor safety.
