Where can I find detailed information on school loan consolidation?
I have done a lot of research on this topic and recently re-consolidated my student loans to take advantage of a new program that forgives any remaining balance for people who have public service jobs after 10 years of payments (essentially any government or non-profit job qualifies). Assuming that you are in the U.S, the Department of Education’s website has the most authoritative information: http://loanconsolidation.ed.gov/borrower/borrower.shtml Before you consolidate (or re-consolidate), please be sure to learn about the new student loan forgiveness and Income-Based Repayment programs. If you make the right choices, you may qualify for very low payments and forgiveness of any remaining balance after 10 or 25 years. If you want to take advantage of these, you will need to use the federal Direct Loan program as your lender.
