With a little extra effort, you can find free cardboard boxes for your next move easily.

Check ahead of time with your local grocery store, drug store or liquor store. They tend to get weekly shipments of their products, and if you go at the right time, you may be able to score some free cardboard boxes right after the shipment has come in. Timing is key, however-- most stores will break down boxes for recycling within a few days.

You should also check online for local cardboard box recycle and reuse programs. Many communities that are making an effort to be more environmentally friendly will have programs where people can donate used boxes to those who need them. You can also check online classifieds like Craigslist.org or join listservs like Freecycle.org. Many people will list free cardboard boxes that they are about to throw away. Alternatively, you can put up an ad for wanted free cardboard boxes.

well I've always had luck just going in the back of grocery stores, where there are dumpsters, usually they'll have a dumpster just for cardboard, mainly boxes are in there, and they usually break them down, not rip them up. If you can't find anything like that, you can always go to a convenience store / gas station, or a grocery store for that matter, and just ask for some. Usually whoever you ask might ask a manager, but they won't care if you take some, they don't need them for anything. And if you're really picky and need to get your hands on the good stuff... lol, i.e... brand new never used boxes.... it's a long shot, but you can go to a place where they pack things (In boxes... duh), preferably a place where you know someone who works there. You can ask your friend, or just a random person (if you're that desperate for them... lol) to see about getting some. Usually if it's not too too many, the manager, or someone in the shipping department will "ok" giving you maybe a bundle ...  more
