Before you can be a K-9 Officer, you need to become a regular police officer. So the question should be, “Where can I go to school or to a police academy to become a police officer?” In the Pittsburgh area, there are two main training schools you can attend to earn state certification as a police officer (which is referred to as Act 120 certification). They are the Allegheny County Police Training Academy in North Park and Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) in Indiana, PA. In other areas or states, check with your local police departments to find the local training academies or schools and their requirements. Once you are certified, then you must apply to departments which interest you and are accepting applications and go through their testing procedures.
