There is one book, in particular, regarding American history that I can’t recommend enough: Founding Brothers by Joseph Ellis. This was my “gateway” book into a passionate interest in American history. A fairly quick read, the book helps highlight that our Founding Fathers were real people. In adding the human element to the story, the drama / risk / enormity of the events really sinks in. I have recommended this to a lot of people and have never had negative feedback. If you can get a kid into this, there are endless new bios on specific people that help add fine detail to the American story. Also, look into some great films (“Gandhi”, “Kundun”, “Saving Private Ryan”, “Schindler’s List”, etc.) to help educate and spurn interest.
