Where did Australians fight during World War 2?
In World War II, Australia joined the Allied forces in Egypt and Libya. Their goal was to protect the Suez Canal from the Italians, and later, Field Marshall Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Korps. The Canal itself was very important to delivering natural resources to Great Britain (coal,oil etc) and reinforcing them with more machinery. It was also the most efficient route of transportation to Great Britain, because without it, cargo ships would need to travel around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. A leading English General by the name of Montgomery once remarked: “More and more as the years go by I understand that we could not have done this without the Australian 9th division” (better known as the rats of Tobruk). I personally consider this to be Australia’s greatest contribution to World War II. In Europe, Australian troops were involved with Operation Overlord (D-Day) on June the 6th, 1944. Their efforts were instrumental. They also served afterwards in the advance to Berlin. In Greec
