Where did John Dalton do most of his research?
Being a Quaker, Dalton was barred from attending or teaching at the major universities in England, so much of his early work was carried out at a Quaker school that he and his brother ran in Kendal in England’s Lake District. He was later awarded a teaching position at New College in Manchester–another “Dissenting” school–before making a living as a private tutor. Much of his later work was carried out in Manchester, where he was first an elected Member, and later President of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society.
