It started with the children of the children of the African slaves which were brought to the Americas for the sugar. The slaves on the plantations had ways of dancing that were now derived from the African tribal dances which included lots of stomping and jumps and very rhythmic. These folks then wanted to make sounds with their stomping and so they would add stuff to the bottom of their shoes to make louder sounds. The blacks in the early 20th century then used to perform in troupes that style of dance of which the white men then also decided to portray with modifications. That is tap dance.
