Taking a quick look at how a cellphone works hands you the answer to your question. A cellphone is essentially a radio. The cities across the nations of the world have several towers that split the work of handling signal transmissions down into smaller areas that were dubbed as "cells", due to the combination of these signals resembling that of a honeycomb. When you move from cell to cell during a call, the cell you enter will take over your signal where the previous one left off. Because of this the radio used to make the calls was named a "cellular phone." Cell phone is simply an abbreviation of the term.

The cell phone got it's name from the word cellular. Cell is the generic industry term. The word cell itelf was givin due to the physical appearance of the actual cell site installations that resemble a honeycomb shape.  more
