Where did witches originate from?

Well if you mean the ones from the SALEM witch trials than most of the ones accused where not really witches at all they where just people that may have acted a little out of the ordinary so the village thought it would be a great idea to blame there problems on these people and kill them. Now if you mean the ones from the burning times well a lot of them where actual witches, the origins of witchcraft aren't fully understood or known but they most likely came from shamanic and pagan traditions of the time, and as for the murdering of the witches back then well it was most likely for the same reason as the Salem witch trials (just a side note the Salem witch trials happened a good number of years after the ones over in England).
